I think losing Spezza would be a big loss for the team. He's a game breaker for them, and I think they could still sign him if they're willing to sacrifice some of the not so good depth players who could be replaced by prospects in the short term |

He might be one of the worst owners in the league. You sell out almost every night and he still can't make money. Fans will stop going to the game if he continues this trend. With people having a hard time to make ends meet, it's more likely for the average fan to stay home and watch a sub par product from their own homes. How will Eugene pay the bills when there is 5000 empty seats every night? |

I'm expecting another negative offseason. Last year we lost Alfie.. This year it looks like Spezza is gone. I can't imagine any UFA's would ever consider this sinking ship as a team they'd want to join. |

if that happens Bettman should intervene, you cant let an owner run a team into the ground bc he was a poopty business man in his other non hockey related ventures |

Ottawa area fans did stop going to games last year, attendance dropped something like 2,000 per game on average.
Doesn't seem to have taught Eugene anything, though. |

Attracting fans is one thing. How do you sit down with bobby Ryan this year and tell him your plan on how to win with 12 million dollars less them every cup contender? |

That should be happening anyway.
Ottawa will get something for him if he is in fact moved, however, everyone seems to be posting lineups with no replacements at all the last few days. So I guess some fans are quite comfortable seeing Spezza moved for very little. |

I think I should have a summer competition in the spirit of the organization. I think I'll create a three-tier prize system.
Goal is to make the best, absolute cheapest roster possible. Emphasis on the cheap part.
Here's a $53MM one and I even signed a UFA D + traded for Chris Stewart!

I feel like 2014-2015 should be THE year for the Senators, and let me explain.
Just like Travis said, they have so much room for contracts and they don't have to re-sign anyone of importance this Summer. If the goal is to spend 56M, with some of our frontloaded contracts like Spezza's, that means we could possibly go above the 60M cap hit but still pay les, and go after a big name for a 1-year contract, or go after some good rentals next year.
The problem however will be at the end of the 2014-2015 season. MacArthur, Spezza, Ryan, Anderson, Zibanejad and Methot will all be up for new contracts. We won't have money to sign all of them.
Out of these players I think one is more likely than not to resign with us, and that is be Bobby Ryan. He is Bryan Murray's priority.
A player to watch next year will be Kyle Turris. If he has a fantastic year - he had his first full season as a Senator this year - and puts up 70points (which I think is a feat he could achieve), I think the Senators will most likely part ways with Spezza at the deadline for some picks and prospects and make Turris the clear #1C for the next few years.
If Turris continues to play well with MacArthur and Ryan, I would try and resign Mac for a year or two at the same amount of dollars, and I think Mac would accept.
I also think Lehner will be used more often so that we can trade Craig Anderson at the deadline and get a decent prospect in return for the 2015 draft.
As for Methot, I'm sure both parties would like to keep him as a Senators, but the organization probably won't want to spend more than 4M/Y on his contract. Methot will have to chose what he wants to do. I wouldn't be surprised if he leaves, but we can't afford too much money on a defensive defenseman.
As for Zibanejad, I am not sure what his future holds for him. Seems like he is a very good player, but also already injury-prone. With Lazar being a blue-chip prospect, a gritty center, I think Bryan Murray will want him to be in the NHL very quickly. I actually think he will already have stints with the team next year. And if it happens, and if he does a good job, I could very easily see Bryan Murray trade Zibanejad for a defenseman. Murray could trade Zibanejad to a team looking for a #2C for fomeone who is signed mid-long term, a la Hjalmarsson/Edler, who we could pair with Karlsson for some stability at the blue line.
2015 will be the Summer where the whole franchise's image will change. |

I'm sorry, but if you lose bobby Ryan, it will be a bigger loss than the Alfie situation. You lost Alfie and " turned the page" and brought in bobby Ryan. Now if he walks within a 2 years of Alfie, how do you explain what direction you are going in to your fan base or any of your players for that matter? |
